UbuntuBSD 稱自己是 『Unix for human beings』，這一點也不人驚訝。如果你能想起來的話，Ubuntu 使用的標語是 『Linux for human beings』 ，並且在過去的 11 年裡它確實讓一個『正常人』有可能用上 Linux。
UbuntuBSD 有著同樣的想法。它想讓新手能夠接觸到 Unix ，以及能使用它——如果我能這樣說的話。至少，這就是它的目標。
什麼是 BSD ？ 它和 Linux 有哪些不同？
如果你是新手，那麼你需要知道 Unix 和 Linux 的區別.
在 Linux 出現之前，Unix 由 AT&T 的 Ken Thompson、 Denis Ricthie 以及他們的團隊設計。這是在可以算作計算機上古時期的 1970 發生的事。當你知道 Unix 是一個閉源的，有產權的操作系統時你可能會感到驚訝。AT&T 給了很多第三方許可，包括學術機構和企業。
美國加州大學伯克利分校是其中一個拿到許可的學術機構。在那裡開發的 Unix 系統叫做 BSD (Berkeley Software Distribution)。BSD 的最出名的開源分支是 FreeBSD，另一個最流行的閉源分支是蘋果的 Mac OS X。
在 1991 年。芬蘭的計算機系大學生 Linus Torvalds 從頭寫了自己的 Unix 系統的複製品。這就是我們今天熟知的 Linux 內核。Linux 的發行版在內核的基礎上添加了圖形界面、GNU 的那一套（cp, mv, ls,date, bash 什麼的）、安裝/管理工具，GNU C/C++ 編譯器以及很多應用。
UbuntuBSD 不是這種發行版的開端
在你知道了 Linux，Unix，FreeBSD 之間的區別之後。我要告訴你的是 UbuntuBSD 不是第一個要在 FreeBSD 內核上作出類似 Linux 的感覺的發行版。
當 Debian 選擇使用 systemd 之後，Debian GNU/kFreeBSD誕生了。它使用的不是通常的 Linux 內核，而是 將 Debian 移植到了 FreeBSD 內核上。
與 Debian GNU/kFreeBSD 類似，UbuntuBSD 是將 Ubuntu 移植到了 FreeBSD 內核上。
UbuntuBSD Beta 版代號： Escape From SystemD
UbuntuBSD 的第一個版本已經發布，代號為「Escape From SystemD 」。它基於 Ubuntu 15.10 和 FreeBSD 10.1.
它的默認桌面環境為 Xfce ，桌面以及伺服器均可使用。 對於 ZFS 的支持也包含在這個版本中。開發者還提供了一個文本界面的安裝器。

我不建議任何人馬上就去開心地去嘗試這個系統。它仍在開發並且安裝器還是文本界面的。不過如果你足夠自信的話，直接去下載體驗吧。但是如果你是新手的話，請等一段時間，至少不要現在就去嘗試：
